Spinal Needle

Spinal needle is a specialized needle used to access the subarachnoid space for procedures like spinal anaesthesia or lumbar puncture.

Features of a Spinal Needle

1. Material
   • SUB 304 stainless steel
   • Rigid enough for precise insertion but thin to minimize tissue trauma
2. Gauge (Size)
   • Typically ranges from 22G to 27G
   • Higher gauge = thinner walled needle, less pain and lower risk of complications.
3. Length
   • 8.0-15 cm
   • Longer needles used for obese patients to reach the subarachnoid space
4. Tip Design
   • Tip - sharp bevel that cuts tissue
   • Pencil-point tip (Whitacre, Sprotte)
   • Rounded tip that separates fibers.
   • Reduces risk of post-dural puncture headache.
5. Stylet
   • A solid inner rod (stylet) fits inside the needle
   • Prevents tissue from blocking the lumen during insertion
6. Hub
   • Transparent
   • Semi-transparent.
   • Allows visualization of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow.
7. Lumen (Hollow Channel)
   • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collection.
   • Injection of aesthetic drugs
8. Markings
   • Depth markings on the shaft help guide insertion
9. Sterility
   • ETO sterilized, single use to prevent infection.
10. Color Coding
    • Colored hub according to gauge size for identification.
